Woodside,CA July 11, 2004 --
The Peninsula Women's Salon has been founded by financial literacy advocate, author, and consultant, Teresa M. Dentino, for divorcing women with particular concerns about improving their financial skill sets and analytical abilities.
Dentino says, โWomen still lack the confidence needed to assure more positive outcomes when it comes to financial decisions and these issues are at the forefront when they are navigating the divorce process.โ
The scenario for a typical divorced women's support group might be visualized as several dejected women in a drab church basement being encouraged by a financial "coach" to assert themselves and take charge of their feelings.
At the Peninsula Women's Salon, which meets in the exclusive suburbs of Woodside, Portola Valley, and Atherton, CA, the only similarity to that scenario is that the members are women. Up-scale accommodations in private settings lend an uplifting feeling to these "denomination-free" gatherings.
Teresa M. Dentino, CEO/Founder of theFinancial411, doesn't brook any compassion for โvictim mentality". Her unique business concept centers on teaching women how to take responsibility for their financial futures, regardless of their marital status.
Dentino doesn't spend time delving into how her clients' money habits were influenced in childhood by parenting issues. โWhat matters to me is what you're doing NOW about learning practical financial skill sets and developing your analytical processes,โ says Ms. Dentino from her offices in Woodside,California.
โMy clients are well-heeled, sophisticated women in every other area of their lives, but often they are sacrificial lambs when it comes to the financial arena. Many of my clients have been married to Mr.
C-Level Executive for the last 25 years, never with more than an allowance to be accountable for, not even knowing how to open a checking account at the bank. The prospects for their handling the more complex financial transactions that accompany divorce are alarming.โ
"In my Peninsula Women's Salons, the emphasis is on the positive. A hands-on, interactive approach is used to convey finance and economic concepts in a language that women can understand. By removing the โmumbo-jumboโ, these women easily develop their latent analytical skills.
Even for those women who are in the pre-divorce stage, there are insights as well as practical precursor steps to the process that immediately save time, money, and that can have significant impact on settlement results."
Author and publisher of a personal finance newsletter for women, โFinancial Rights of Passage," and principal of an active finance consulting practice, Dentino is at the cutting edge again by creating this exclusive, strictly confidential, anonymous divorce support group for women only.
To insure the safety and confidentiality of members, locations of the meetings are not disclosed until applicants have been screened and a non-disclosure agreement is signed. Members use first names only, unless they choose to reveal their last name. The 'Salon' members find the privacy measures a welcome consideration for protecting the delicate nature of their concerns and personal information. An added benefit is that with the ability to speak freely, members experience a deeper learning experience - unlike that found in public seminars and workshops.
As with the learning of any new skill set, repetition is the mother of understanding, and the effectiveness of iterative exposure is drawn into play.
Dentino works with each participant individually to develop a personalized checklist for action items, and takes a no-nonsense view toward her clients assuming accountability. โI have clients who have gone from believing everything they were told at the bank, financial institution, or loan company to understanding what probing questions to ask and what analyses must be made before accepting information at face value in order to make a financial decision.
The skills learned in my Salons translate to all aspects of the divorce process where complex and high-stakes financial discussions occur. I've seen these transformations take place in as little as four meetings.โ
What sets Dentino apart from others who offer divorce support forums - while she holds several high-level securities industry licenses and her 20 years of finance experience includes multi-million dollar portfolio management - is that she provides no investment services, to insure that there is no conflict of interest.
Instead she refers members to other high-performing and trustworthy advisors for which she receives no compensation.
To further demonstrate her commitment to promoting financial literacy, she has provided a sponsorship at the Entrepreneurial Level for the BIZWorld Foundation. Founded by Silicon Valley venture capitalist Tim Draper, the BIZWorld mission is "to bring the concepts of financial literacy to our schools." Dentino has further decided that a portion of the proceeds from her Peninsula Women's Salons will go to benefit the BizWorld hands-on experiential programs.
For those who are either pre-divorce, already engaged in the process, or post-divorce, this group was formed to address the lack of substantive education that is available for learning practical finance skills in an uncompromised environment while providing a support network for its members. Offered on a continuing weekly basis on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, the next enrollments available are for the July 28 and July 31st start dates in Portola Valley and Atherton, CA, with new enrollments accepted weekly.
Maximum size is 15 per meeting and registration covers 4 meetings that fit the member's schedule. Referrals to trustworthy professionals in the legal, financial, and accounting fields are made to members as needed. A private group email for members only facilitates communication and support between meeting times.
